Cubs into Space!

30th September 2010

Cubs into Space!IMG_2177_1.jpg

On 25th September the Cubs joined other Cubs from Swanley, Dartford & Gravesham Districts not at Houston but at Gravesend Grammar School for Girls. Their mission: To complete the requirements for the Cub Scout Astronomers Badge.

Armed with their Intergalactic passports, 12 of our Cubs entered into the Space Zone through an ‘airlock’ where they were met by ‘Astronauts’ who stamped their passports.  The day was filled with activities exploring aspects of astronomy and space travel.

The highlight of the day for many was the “Astrodome” show, a portable planetarium in which the Plough constellation and the North stars were identified during a brief and amusing guide to the sky at night.

During the day the team worked together to build a moon buggy from junk, and everyone made star-scopes in which star constellations were copied on to card to assist with star recognition later.

Unfortunately the weather at the end of the day did not allow the planned star gazing to happen, but everyone returned back to the mother planet (home) exhausted, having had a brilliant day & having gained their Cub Astronomy badge
