BIG GUN makes sure Scout Fun Day goes with a Bang!

4th July 2009

Reg Cannon, aka Ma-Zakamtamka, which translated means howitzer or big gun, opened this years Scout Family Fun Day on 4th July held on the Common Meadow.

With the day coinciding with American Independence day it was apt that a descendant of a Red Indian was on hand to launch the festivities!

Musical entertainment provided by the Mike Richards Big Band a 24 piece jazz band made sure things went with a swing.

A good ol’ fashioned BBQ next to the saloon (beer tent) as well as tea and apple pie kept the punters in good spirits.

The main event was the It’s a Knock Out event which proved popular with the young people and parents alike. 6 teams of young people entered who were eventually whittled to just 2 competing in races with ski’s , clown trousers, a giant inflatable obstacle course too keep teams keen. There was no let up when the parents were invited to take on a team of Scout Leaders! The contest was finally over when the ‘Rockets’ one of the Cub teams eventually won!

Anya Williment who will be playing Dorothy in the Riverside Players forth coming production of Wizard of Oz gave us a rousing preview of the show with ‘Somewhere Over the Rainbow’ accompanied by the Mike Richards Band

The day was finished off with the Raffle being drawn by Big Gun, and the presentation of the Rainbow, Guide, Beaver, Cub, Scout & Explorer Scout of the year awards. Unfortunately not all of the recipients could be there, but we will ensure they get their awards in due course. One new award this year was the Rivett Trophy for the Brownie of the year, which has been donated by the Rivett Family in memory of Stan & Esme who had a long association with Scouts & Guiding in the village.

We would like to thank all who came along to support us on the day by spending money and of course all the helpers & leaders who ran the stalls and assisted with moving the equipment around. Most of all the biggest thanks go to Nicqui Willis who after 10 year of organising this event for us is going to take a well earned rest next year! THANK YOU NICQUI!
